Huguo Guanyin Temple
Beijing, China
HuGuo Guanyin Temple, located on the dragon vein of Beijing's central axis, was founded in the middle and late Ming Dynasty. It has a history of more than 500 years. It was rebuilt during the Qing Qianlong period and later renovated in 2019. It was officially opened to the public for the first time on September 29, 2023.
"Originally there is nothing, no dust to be wiped", with the yearning for all the beauty in the world, on the Mid-Autumn night, the most perfect day of the year, Dai Ying chose the number 108, a perfect number, to complete a perfect exhibition.
Dai Ying scattered 108 bottles of soil collected from all over the country on the land in Beijing.
She cupped the earth in her hands, walking barefoot through the grand hall, merging with water, an essential element for both humans and the earth. The soil scattered over her body and on the ground; the audience could hear the sound of her footsteps on the earth and the creaking as it rubbed against her teeth...
"I use this way to bring together everyone's heart, energy, and strength in one space and time." Dai Ying inspires the best of human nature.
Earth holds immense importance in Dai Ying's mind, symbolizing her fundamental human nature. "The earth is our mother; no one can live without it, and we will ultimately return to the soil as well. Our lives are nourished by the earth. Soil is the most basic substance in our lives, like a mother's womb, like a mother's strength, embracing everything and accepting all."
Dai Ying has a deep attachment to her homeland. A bottle of soil has accompanied her for over a decade, ever-present since she left her hometown of Mount Emei, becoming an indispensable part of her life. This bottle of soil represents my roots, and my sense of security, and it is always with me. The substances in this bottle come from her hometown, carrying the scent and memories of home. Though the soil has been weathered, it remains an essential presence in Dai Ying's life.
This bottle of soil has led Dai Ying to think more closely about the public. How to use art to provoke the public's thinking.
108 is just a specific number, a number that connects everyone's hearts. Through this perfect number 108, Dai Ying gathered 108 people from 108 different places across the country, asking them to collect soil from their birthplaces and place it in containers closest to their memories. These collected samples were then gathered in the main hall of HuGuo Guanyin Temple in Beijing, where Dai Ying scattered them on the land of Beijing through her actions. At the same time, water was introduced into Dai Ying's performance art because she believes water is nectar, an essential substance for both humans and the earth, nourishing everyone and this land.
In this way, Dai Ying gathers everyone's heart, energy, and strength in one space and time. On the perfect day of the year —— Mid-Autumn night, the full moon night, everyone's hearts are tightly connected together to present everyone's expectations and pursuit of a better life.
During the process of collecting soil, each person recorded a 30-second video, sharing their deepest and most genuine feelings about their homeland. The videos they presented deeply moved Dai Ying. Everyone's attachment to their homeland and the warmth in their hearts were vividly portrayed in that moment, and everyone's hearts were closely connected through the soil. By gathering strength from 108 bottles of soil, it also ignited the best aspects of human nature—this is what Dai Ying wanted to see and was willing to do.
Dai Ying‘s performance art is a presentation using the body as a medium. Her performance art, like her paintings, has no design or planning from start to finish; it is entirely an impromptu expression. Dai Ying‘s painting process, from the first stroke to the last, lacks any preliminary sketches or final drafts. However, when she puts down the brush for the last time, she knows that the work is complete.
When Dai Ying was about to present her art, all her states and every movement emerged from within at that moment, without a trace of pretense or distraction. She followed her feelings with her whole being, guided by her heart to complete the artwork. From the moment she stepped into the grand hall, a force had been guiding each step and every move of Dai Ying's. There was no planning, but she knew it should be done this way. The final piece presented was exactly what Dai Ying wanted to express.
